Dayton, Ohio-Dayton starting pitcher Tyler Mondile retired 21 of 22 batters, firing a one-hit shutout in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday night to give the Dragons a 3-0 win over the Great Lakes Loons and a split of the twinbill. Great Lakes won the first game, 9-4. A crowd of 8,024 was in attendance at Fifth Third Field.
Mondile allowed a one-out double in the top of the first inning and then retired the remaining 20 batters of the game. He struck out eight to fire the first seven-inning shutout for a Dragons pitcher since Austin Orewiler shutout Bowling Green in 2016.
The Dragons scored two runs in the second inning to take an early lead. With one out, Hendrik Clementina doubled to left field, and Miles Gordon followed with a single to center. Clementina scored on the play when the ball skipped past the center fielder as Gordon went to second. Leandro Santana followed with a double to left to drive in Gordon and make it 2-0.
In the fourth, Santana blasted a one-out, solo home run to left field to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead. It was Santana's second homer of the year. Mondile did the rest to earn his first career complete game and shutout.
In the first game, Great Lakes scored two runs in the second and four in the fourth to jump out to a commanding 6-0 lead. The Dragons scored three runs in the final inning, getting an RBI single from Jeter Downs along with a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch that brought in another run.
Dragons game one starter Hunter Greene (0-3) went three and one-third innings, allowing seven hits and three runs with no walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss.
