KISSIMMEE, FL -  The Tortugas banged out 12 singles to give Tommy Bergjans his first win with the Tortugas in their 6-1 victory over the Florida Fire Frogs at Osceola County Stadium on Sunday morning. Daytona took three out four in the initial series of the first half, improving to 9-2 against the Fire Frogs this season.
Florida scored first in each of the first three games of the series and Sunday was no exception. With one-out, Jared James singled and stole second. He then moved up to third on a Kurt Hoekstra basehit and scored on a Ray-Patrick Didder single to go up 1-0.
The Tortugas tied it up, and took the lead, against LHP Tucker Davidson in the fourth. Bruce Yari and Ibandel Isabel each led off with a pair of singles. Mitch Nay then roped a base hit into left field to score Yari, tying the game. After a Stuart Fairchild infield single loaded the bases, Daniel Sweet walked to score Isabel from third to go up, 2-1.
The score would remain that way until the Tortugas were able to provide themselves some insurance in the seventh against the Fire Frogs bullpen. Taylor Trammell was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and advanced to second on a Randy Ventura bunt single. Both runners moved up 90-feet on a Yari ground out. Tyler Stephenson then brought home Trammell with a fly ball to right field, while Isabel and Nay followed with back-to-back RBI singles to put the Tortugas up 5-1.
The Tortugas would add another tally in the eighth, just for good measure. Hector Vargas hit a one-out single, stole second, and scored on another Ventura single, his fifth in the last two days against his former organization.
Bergjans (1-0) earned his first win since joining the Reds organization by tossing six, one-run frames. He allowed five hits, two walks,, and struck out six. Davidson (4-6) earned his third loss against Daytona in three starts this season. He went five innings, allowed seven hits, two runs, a walk, and struck out four.
The Tortugas are off Monday, before returning home to The Jack on Tuesday to begin a three-game series with the Clearwater Threshers. RHP Tony Santillan (6-4, 2.96 ERA) will start the opener for Daytona.
First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
