DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Andrew Jordan allowed one run in six innings to win his Daytoan debut in the Tortugas 3-1 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads Saturday afternoon at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Jupiter has scored one run on eights hit in the series, and just two runs total over their last four games.
Nonetheless, it was the Hammerheads who got the scoring started in the top of the second. James Nelson led off the inning with a double, one of his three hits, before moving to third on a fly ball. Larazo Alonso drove in Nelson from third with a sacrifice fly to left field, his first RBI with Jupiter.
Daytona made it a fleeting lead for Jupiter, tying up the game in the home half. Ibandel Isabel reached on a Luis Pindor throwing error to begin the inning, and moved first-to-third on a Daniel Sweet single to center. Michael Beltre then tied the game with a grounder to second for his seventh RBI.
The Tortugas took their first lead of the afternoon in the very next inning. Randy Ventura lined a one-out double down the left field line, then moved to third after Brantley Bell flied out to center. Ventura would come in to score on a wild pitch from RHP Dustin Beggs, making it 2-1, one pitch before Beggs recorded the final out of the stanza.
Daytona added some late insurance when Morgan Lofstrom lined the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth inning over the left field wall for his first home run in over a year, making it 3-1.
Jordan (1-0) allowed one run on three hits with two walks in his six innings. Beggs (0-1) takes the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) and three hits with two walks in seven innings. Beggs struck out ten Tortugas, matching a career-high. RHP Ryan Hendix earned his sixth save after tossing a scoreless ninth.
The Tortugas will look to sweep the Hammerheads out of Daytona on Sunday evening. RHP Tommy Bergjans (1-1, 3.74 ERA) will get the ball for the Tortugas against RHP Ethan Clark (1-2, 3.28 ERA).
First pitch Sunday is scheduled for 5:35 PM, with coverage beginning at 5:20 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
