LAKELAND, FL - The Flying Tigers jumped all over RHP Andrew Jordan on Thursday night, scoring nine times in the bottom of the first in route to a 12-1 rout at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium. The game was called after a 43-minute rain delay in the middle of the fifth. Daytona was outscored 30-6 in the series and was swept in a four game set for the first time since July 2017, also against Lakeland.
The first six Flying Tigers reached base. After an error, a hit batter, and a walk loaded the bags ahead of Daniel Pinero, who hit a grand slam to left to put Lakeland up 4-0. Two-pitches later Jose Azocar singled, then scored from first on an AJ Simcox triple.
Lakeland would load up the bases again with two outs ahead of Chad Sedio, who unloaded them with a three-run triple down the right field line to make it 8-0. After the triple, LHP Kevin Canelon came out of the bullpen and allowed an RBI infield single to Troy Montgomery, extending the lead to 9-0.
Bruce Yari led off the top of the second with a single, moved into scoring position on a groundout, and scored from second on a Tyler Stephenson single for the Tortugas only run.
The Flying Tigers got back in the run column in the third. Sedio led off with a single off RHP Brian Hunter and moved first-to-third on a Montgomery double. Two-pitches later, Pinero drove in Sedio from third with an RBI groundout to put Lakeland into double-digits. A two-out single from Austin Athmann scored Montgomery and made it an 11-1 game.
Lakeland rounded out the scoring in the fourth. Derek Hill singled to start the frame and moved first-to-third on a Luke Burch double. Hill would score on a sacrifice fly from Montgomery.
LHP Eudis Idrogo (3-3) earns the win in relief. He retired all eight Tortugas he faced with a strikeout. Jordan (1-5) worked just ⅔ of an inning. He allowed nine runs (four earned) on four hits. Jordan also walked two and hit two.
The Tortugas will now head to Tampa for a three-game weekend series. RHP Tommy Bergjans (3-2, 3.98) will try and help Daytona avoid their first five-game slide of the season. RHP Albert Abreu (3-3, 4.30) will start for the Tarpons.
First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6:30 PM with coverage beginning at 6:20 PM with the Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
