CLEARWATER, FL - The Clearwater Threshers sent nine to the plate during a five run bottom of the fifth inning in their 6-2 victory over the Daytona Tortugas Monday night at Spectrum Field in Clearwater. The Tortugas have now lost four of their last five games.
Henri Lartigue got the night's scoring started when he hit a solo home run to left off of LHP Scott Moss with two outs in the bottom of the first.
Daytona tied the game in the top of the third. Michael Beltre hit a triple on the first pitch of the frame, then came in to score on a Randy Ventura single.
Clearwater broke the 1-1 tie with the five run fifth. Raul Rivas and Kevin Markham hit back-to-back one out singles before Moss retired Jose Gomez for the second out. Then, with a 3-0 count, Luke Wiliiams took him deep to left with a three-run homer to make it a 4-1 Thresher lead. Following a four-pitch walk to Lartigue, Jose Pujols got in on the home run derby with a two-run shot to left field to put his team up 6-1.
The Tortugas rounded out the scoring in the top of the eighth. Ventura reached on a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came in to score on a Tyler Stephenson base hit to cut the deficit to 6-2.
RHP Alejandro Requena (2-2) took the win, striking out a season-high eight. He allowed just one run on five hits in six innings.
