JUPITER, FL - The Tortugas suffered their first three game losing streak with a 6-3 loss Sunday afternoon against the Palm Beach Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium. The Tortugas became the final team in the Florida State League to endure such a streak, 33 days after anyone else.
For the first time in the series, the Tortugas scored first. Bruce Yari led off the second with a single and scored Mitch Nay's second triple of the season for the 1-0 lead.
However, it was a fleeting advantage for the Tortugas, as the the Cardinals would strike for four in the home half, in part because of a pair of Tortuga errors. After LHP Ty Boyles retired the first hitter of the frame, Brian O'Keefe singled and Taylor Bryant reached base on a Nay error. Ryan McCarvel followed by hitting a wall-ball double to left, driving in O'Keefe to tie the score at one.
Two pitches later, Kramer Robertson drove in both men with a bounding-basehit to center to put Palm Beach up, 3-1. After Boyles recorded the second out, Robertson stole second and advanced to third on a sailed throw from Morgan Lofstrom. He would then score on an infield single from Shane Billings a batter later for the 4-1 lead.
Daytona would get within one run in the top of the third. The first run came in when Brantley Bell scored on a RHP Sam Tewes wild pitch. Trailing 4-2, Nay then came up a few batters later with the tying runs in scoring position, but hit into a fielder's choice, driving in just one run and squandering the opportunity.
Palm Beach got one of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Boyles gave up three straight singles to start the frame, with the third, from O'Keefe, driving in Johan Mieses from second to go up 5-3.
The Cardinals rounded out the scoring in the eighth inning against RHP Joel Kuhnel. Andy Young was hit by an 0-2 pitch and proceeded to steal second, move to third on a ground out, and come in to score on a Bryant single, for the 6-3 final.
Tewes (1-0) earned the win, going six innings while allowing six hits, three runs, and a walk. He struck out eight Tortugas, the second most of his career. Boyles (2-5) was handed the loss, after allowing five runs for the fourth straight start. He worked six innings, surrendering nine hits, the five runs (three earned), and striking out four. RHP Junior Fernandez earned his first career save by recording the final five outs, with the help of two double plays, during his first appearance since July of last season.
Daytona will head to St. Lucie to begin a series of six games in four days on Monday. Tomorrow's doubleheader will begin with the resumption of a game from May 26that The Jack and will feature RHP Tommy Bergjans on the mound in his team debut.
First pitch Monday is scheduled for 4:00 PM, with coverage beginning at 3:45 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
