‘Birds Battle but Fall in 11 Innings to Red Sox, 5-4

Darell Hernaiz leads the way, going 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs

SALISBURY, MD – In a thrilling 11-inning contest, the Delmarva Shorebirds battled but ultimately came up short to the Salem Red Sox 5-4 on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. It was a see-saw contest between the Shorebirds (9-23) and Red Sox (17-15) in front of 3,333 raucous fans.

SALISBURY, MD – In a thrilling 11-inning contest, the Delmarva Shorebirds battled but ultimately came up short to the Salem Red Sox 5-4 on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

It was a see-saw contest between the Shorebirds (9-23) and Red Sox (17-15) in front of 3,333 raucous fans.

Salem got started right away in the first as Tyler Miller produced an RBI single to start the scoring.

Delmarva tied the game in the third when Darell Hernaiz lined a ball into left to score Josue Cruz.

It was Hernaiz again in the fifth vaulting Delmarva ahead with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season.

The lead evaporated quickly though as Eddinson Paulino doubled home two in the top of the sixth to know the score at 3-3.

Eduardo Lopez gave Salem a one-run lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI double but Isaac De León worked a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 4-4.

The game went to extras and after both teams went down scoreless in the tenth, Salem scratched across a run in the eleventh on a Paulino sacrifice fly, securing the 5-4 win.

Osvaldo De La Rosa (3-1) earned his second win of the week for Salem by firing two scoreless innings, allowing just a walk while striking out two.

Hugo Beltran (0-1) was the tough luck loser for Delmarva after allowing an unearned run in the eleventh on a hit, striking out one.

Miguel Suero collected his first save of the season for Salem with a scoreless eleventh, hitting one batter and striking out one as well.

The Shorebirds and Red Sox wrap up their series on Sunday, May 15. Juan De Los Santos (1-3, 1.67) gets the ball for Delmarva against Wikelman Gonzalez (1-1, 2.29) for Salem. First pitch from Perdue Stadium is slated for 2:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
