‘Birds Cap Homestand With 11-4 Win over FredNats

Shorebirds take five of six from FredNats; go 6-6 on homestand

SALISBURY, MD – The Delmarva Shorebirds banged out 13 hits, including two homers, en route to an 11-4 win over the Fredericksburg Nationals on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds (15-24) finished their 12-game homestand by taking five of six from the Nationals (20-18) with the win.

SALISBURY, MD – The Delmarva Shorebirds banged out 13 hits, including two homers, en route to an 11-4 win over the Fredericksburg Nationals on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The Shorebirds (15-24) finished their 12-game homestand by taking five of six from the Nationals (20-18) with the win.

The FredNats scored first in the opening frame as Steven Williams produced a two-out RBI single.

The ‘Birds tied it in the bottom of the first when Darell Hernaiz scored on a wild pitch.

Delmarva blasted the game open in the third. After the first two batters reached, Noelberth Romero bounced an RBI double down the leftfield line to put the ‘Birds in front. Darell Hernaiz followed with an RBI single before Isaac Bellony drove in two more with a double. After a groundout and a strikeout, Ryan Higgins demolished a two-run homer, his second of the season, to make it 7-1.

Leandro Emiliani slugged a solo homer, his fourth of the year, to get a run back for the FredNats in the top of the fourth.

The ‘Birds answered with three more in the bottom of the fourth. Luis Valdez started the frame with a solo homer, his second of the season. Three straight singles, the last by Bellony, produced another run before Isaac De León drove in another with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-2.

De León drove in another run in the sixth with a single for the Shorebirds to make it 11-2.

The FredNats capped the scoring in the game on a Jacob Young RBI triple in the seventh with Young scoring two batters later on an error, leaving the final score at 11-4.

Ryan Long (1-1) collects his first career win for the Shorebirds after throwing two scoreless innings in relief, allowing a hit and two walks while striking out one.

Brendan Collins (2-1) absorbed the loss for Fredericksburg, allowing six runs on four hits and a walk in 2.1 innings, striking out one.

Six different Shorebirds finished with multiple hits in the game. Bellony went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the way while Ryan Higgins also drove in multiple runs ending up at 2-for-5.

After an off-day Monday, the Shorebirds kick off a 12-game road trip on Tuesday, May 24, against the Charleston RiverDogs. Starters for the series opener have not been announced. First pitch from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
