‘Birds Four-Game Winning Streak Snapped by GreenJackets in 7-2 Loss

SALISBURY, MD. – The Delmarva Shorebirds saw their four-game winning come to a close as they were toppled by the Augusta GreenJackets 7-2 on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The loss is the fourth straight the Shorebirds (34-62, 13-18) have suffered against the GreenJackets (11-18).

Augusta got on the board right away in the first. Stephen Paolini tripled with one away and was brought home on a Brandol Mezquita infield single.

Delmarva answered right back in the bottom of the first. Noelberth Romero clubbed a solo homer out to leftfield, his eighth homer of the season, to tie the game at 1-1.

Three straight walks opened the second for Augusta. A wild pitch then allowed Francisco Floyd to score to give Augusta the lead back. After a groundout, Paolini drove in Brian Klein with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

Brandon Parker walked to lead off the third and then took second on a wild pitch with a subsequent throwing error allowing him to go to third. Adam Zebrowski then drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Kadon Morton walked to start the frame. Morton moved to second on a groundout and then with two away, Mezquita beat out another infield single, with Morton scoring from second to make it 5-1. Mezquita then stole second and scored when a groundball coaxed an errant throw, making it 6-1 Augusta.

Mishael Deson smashed a solo homer on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth, his second of the season, bringing home the final run of the game for Delmarva.

The GreenJackets stretched it out to 7-2 in the fifth. Geraldo Quintero walloped a two-out RBI double, scoring Morton from first.

Rainiery Rodriguez (2-2) collected the win for Augusta, throwing six innings and allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out four without issuing a walk.

Conor Grady (4-8) suffered the defeat for Delmarva, allowing six runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings on four hits and six walks, striking out five

The Shorebirds continue their series with the GreenJackets on Tuesday, August 3 at Perdue Stadium. Deivy Cruz (1-0, 1.03) takes the mound for Delmarva against Luis Vargas (4-4, 3.76) for Augusta. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLV.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
