SALISBURY, MD. – The Delmarva Shorebirds grabbed an early lead but were shutout over the final eight frames in a 13-2 loss to the Augusta GreenJackets on Sunday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The loss to the GreenJackets (52-48, 16-18) marked the first time the Shorebirds (34-67, 13-23) had been swept in a six-game series at home.

Delmarva started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Luis Valdez singled and maneuvered his way to third with one out after a throwing error and a passed ball. Reed Trimble then grounded to first with the throw coming to the plate, but Valdez beat the throw to give Delmarva a 1-0 lead. An Isaac De Leon single sent Trimble to third before Frederick Bencosme drove in Trimble with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

From there however, Augusta scored 13 unanswered runs. The GreenJackets tied the game in the second on a Victor De Hoyos RBI single and Kadon Morton RBI groundout.

Stephen Paolini drove in two for Augusta with a single in the fourth to make it 4-2.

Braulio Vasquez extended the Augusta lead to 5-2 with an RBI single in the sixth.

Three more runs came home for Augusta in the seventh on a Paolini RBI double, Brandol Mezquita RBI fielder’s choice, and Eliezel Stevens sacrifice fly.

In the ninth, Augusta scored five more times on a run scoring error and a Mahki Backstrom grand slam, his ninth homer of the season, bringing the final line to 13-2.

Following an off-day Monday, the Shorebirds kick off another six-game home series, this time against the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday, August 9, at Perdue Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLV.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
