Shorebirds Rally From Two-Run Deficit to Earn Series Split Against Mudcats

Frederick Bencosme collects four hits, Ryan Long fires three shutout innings to earn the win

SALISBURY, MD. – After being shut out for the first five innings, the Delmarva Shorebirds rallied from behind to defeat the Carolina Mudcats 3-2 on Sunday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The win secured a series split for the Shorebirds (37-70, 16-26) while they also split the season series

SALISBURY, MD. – After being shut out for the first five innings, the Delmarva Shorebirds rallied from behind to defeat the Carolina Mudcats 3-2 on Sunday evening at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The win secured a series split for the Shorebirds (37-70, 16-26) while they also split the season series 6-6 with the Mudcats (55-53, 21-21) as well.

The Mudcats struck first blood in the second inning. Jadher Areinamo reached on a fielder’s choice and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then stole third with the resulting throw sailing into leftfield, allowing him to score the first run of the game.

After loading the bases to open the fifth on two walks and a hit batter, Jesus Chirinos grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing a run to score, and making it 2-0 Carolina.

The Shorebirds tied the game in the sixth. Frederick Bencosme opened the inning with a base hit and Elio Prado then tripled him home. Stiven Acevedo then chopped a single by a drawn in infield to score Prado and tie the game at 2-2.

In the seventh, Noelberth Romero singled with one away and one out later Mishael Deson singled him to third. Bencosme then came up clutch with his fourth hit of the game, driving in Romero, and putting Delmarva ahead 3-2.

Ryan Long (5-6) was stellar out of the bullpen for the Shorebirds, going the final three innings in scoreless fashion, striking out seven while allowing just a hit.

Miguel Guerrero (1-1) suffered the loss for Carolina, allowing one run over two innings on three hits and a walk, striking out two.

Following an off-day on Monday, the Shorebirds kick off a six-game road series against the Salem Red Sox on Tuesday, August 16 at Carilion Clinic Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
