SALISBURY, MD - The Charleston RiverDogs made history on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium as Janson Junk, Austin DeCarr, and Daniel Alvarez combined to no-hit the Delmarva Shorebirds in a 7-1 win.
The nine-inning no-hitter was the first spun by a RiverDogs (23-28, 56-63) staff since August 3, 1994, when Jim Brower stifled the Columbus RedStixx. It was the first the Shorebirds (24-27, 59-59) have endured since July 3, 2007, when Hector Rondon and Neil Wagner teamed up to do it for the Lake County Captains.
Junk (6-4) got things going for Charleston, allowing an unearned run over the first five innings while walking one, plunking two, and striking out three. DeCarr handled the next three frames, walking two and fanning three. Alvarez entered in the bottom of the ninth and retired three Delmarva hitters in succession, getting Seamus Curran to pop out to third, Jean Carlos Encarnacion to ground out to third, and Ryan Ripken to line out to right field. Once Frederick Cuevas squeezed Ripken's liner, the RiverDogs poured out of the dugout in a subdued celebration.
Luis Perez (3-3) suffered the loss for Delmarva, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits over 4.2 innings, walking three and striking out six.
The RiverDogs took control of the game in the top of the second. Chris Hess banged a double off the wall in left to lead off, then Wilkerman Garcia bunted his way aboard to put men on the corners. Leonardo Molina tapped a cue ball single through the right side, scoring Hess to make it 1-0. After a walk to Eduardo Navas, Frederick Cuevas belted a grand slam down the right field line, capping a five-run inning by putting Charleston up 5-0.
Delmarva got its run in the bottom of the third. Ben Breazeale led off by tapping a grounder back to the mound that Junk mishandled, resulting in an error. Kirvin Moesquit followed with a walk, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Mason McCoy then hit a chopper to short, deep enough to score Breazeale and make it 5-1.
Charleston plated another in the fifth inning as Oswaldo Cabrera singled and eventually scored on a passed ball. In the sixth, Navas went deep to right for a solo home run to give the game its final margin.
Carlos Vidal saved the game for the RiverDogs in the bottom of the seventh, diving for a spectacular catch in left field to rob Moesquit of the would-be single.
Cabrera and Garcia each had two hits and a run for the RiverDogs. Cuevas' grand slam was his first Low-A home run this season.
Delmarva put six men on base without any hits: three on walks, one on the error, and two hit batsmen, both times being Will Robertson.
The Shorebirds aim to salvage the finale against the RiverDogs on Friday night. DL Hall (2-7, 2.24) gets the start for Delmarva against Charleston's Alex Mauricio (1-1, 7.20). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. Friday night features an appearance from Human Cannonball David Smith, Jr. It's also Froggy 99.9 Big Beer Friday and the last Orange Friday of the season; the team's orange jerseys will be auctioned off after the game. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
