Doubledays wallop Williamsport on Sunday

AUBURN, NY - The Great New York State Fair is going on 30 minutes east in Syracuse, but Central New York's best merry-go-round was right here in Auburn during Sunday's third inning.

Eleven Doubledays came to the plate, and a season-high seven of them scored to springboard the Doubledays to an 8-0 thrashing of the Williamsport Crosscutters.

With the game tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the third, Doubledays centerfielder Dale Carey drew a leadoff walk against former Phillies first-rounder Mitch Gueller (5-5). Garrett Gordon singled the speedy Carey over to third, but Gordon himself was caught attempting to take second on the throw. Willie Medina walked with one out, and Osvaldo Abreu followed with a two-run triple to deep right to hand the Doubledays a 2-0 lead.

The offense erupted after that. All-Star Jose Marmolejos singled in Abreu to make it 3-0, and Austin Davidson hit the first of two doubles on the day to drive home Marmolejos two batters later. Bryan Langlois was struck by a pitch to put runners on first and second with two out, and Matt Page rocketed the second triple of the inning to clear the bases and make it 6-0 Doubledays. Carey, who led off the inning, followed with a scorching double to left that scored Page. Gueller was hooked from the game, and by the time reliever Richard Bielski forced a flyout from Gordon, the Doubledays led 7-0.

Not to be outdone, Auburn saw some phenomenal pitching in the game, earning its second shutout victory in three games. Austen Williams (3-3) made perhaps his best start of the season, scattering five hits and a walk over five innings without allowing a run. Williams also received some help from his defense, which turned a double play in each of the first three innings of the game. Connor Bach and Deion Williams closed the door with four solid innings of relief.

The Doubledays play a make-up doubleheader on Monday night against the Jamestown Jammers at Falcon Park. RHP Chase McDowell (1-2, 4.63) makes his first professional start in game one, while RHP Luis Reyes returns from the GCL Nationals to appear in game two. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm.
