One swing downs Doubledays at home

Thompson's three-run shot puts Spikes over top
July 8, 2014

AUBURN, NY - The State College Spikes had one run-scoring swing through the entirety of Monday evening's game. It was enough to win.

Nick Thompson hit a three-run homer against Doubledays starter Matt DeRosier (0-2) in the top of the third, and State College topped Auburn 3-2 under the lights at Falcon Park.

DeRosier worked around hits in both the first and second innings, but ran into trouble in the third. With one out, Darren Seferina and Robelys Reyes both singled to put runners on first and second. That brought up Thompson, who deposited a DeRosier offering over the Falcon Park fence to put the Spikes up 3-0.

The Doubledays struck back in the bottom of the inning. Bryan Langlois legged out an infield hit, and Cody Gunter singled on a pop fly that fell between Spikes second baseman Seferina and centerfielder Collin Radack. Three batters later, Christopher Riopedre launched a double off the wall in left-center to bring home Langlois and Gunter, cutting the lead to 3-2.

However, the Doubledays managed no more offense against Spikes starter Dewin Perez (2-1), who scattered five hits across seven innings of work. David Ramos was brilliant in relief for Auburn, striking out four over two-and-a-third perfect innings.

The Doubledays are back in action at Falcon Park tomorrow night against the Spikes. RHP Drew Van Orden (0-1, 4.50) takes the bump for Auburn against State College RHP Fernando Baez (0-0, 1.69). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, with gates opening at 6. For tickets, head to auburndoubledays.com, call the Doubledays ticket office at (315) 255-2489, or visit the Falcon Park box office.
