AUBURN, NY - Rowan Wick is a large man. Robelys Reyes is not. But on Tuesday night at Falcon Park, both displayed some serious power.
Wick's league-dominating 12th home run of the season put the Spikes up 2-0 in the second, and Reyes' three-run shot in the fourth ended any hope of a Doubledays comeback, as Auburn fell to State College 10-2.
In the top of the second, Wick ripped a Drew Van Orden (1-1) offering over the right field fence, extending his State College franchise record. Wick's 12 homers are double those of the league's second-place masher, Williamsport's Jiandio Tromp. State College rallied for two more against Van Orden to lead 4-0 at the end of the inning.
Auburn got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Jeff Gardner, hitting .057 coming into the night, crushed a Fernando Baez pitch well past the right field wall for his first professional home run. But in the top of the fourth, the Spikes plated two more against Van Orden, who was taken out for lefty RC Orlan. Reyes, who stands just 5-foot-9 and weighs in at 150 pounds, took an Orlan pitch over the fence in left to put the Spikes in control, 9-1.
The Doubledays look to snap a three-game skid in Norwich, CT tomorrow night, as they start a three-game series with the Connecticut Tigers. Doubledays ace Reynaldo Lopez (1-2, 1.31) takes the hill against Tigers RHP Tanner Bailey (1-2, 3.43). Coverage begins on 98.1 FM and 1590 AM WAUB at 6:50, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
