The Woodies (30-14) salvage the finale of the three game series with Winston-Salem (21-21), and snap their three game losing skid. The win was the second walk-off victory of the year, as the Wood Ducks are now 7-1 when leading after eight innings of play. The other walk-off win this season came courtesy of a Ryan Dorow home run to beat Fayetteville, 3-2, on April 27.
Leody Taveras walked to begin the ninth inning against Kevin Escorcia (loss, 1-2). Then Tejeda slashed a single through the right side to put runners at first and third. Dorow was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and with Diosbel Arias at the plate, Escorcia bounced one to the backstop, but Evan Skoug fired home to get Taveras for the first out of the inning. The Dash then walked Arias intentionally to re-load the bases, and that's when Huff lined the game winning single to right-center.
The best scoring opportunity for the Dash came in the first inning against Sal Mendez , when they loaded the bases with one out, but came away without a run. Mendez worked six innings giving up four hits and three walks, but did not allow a run, picking up a strikeout.
Joe Kuzia then fired a scoreless seventh for the Woodies, and Joe Barlow (win, 4-0) struck out a season-high five in two innings in relief, allowing just a one out walk in the ninth.
Dash starter Konnor Pilkington was outstanding in his six innings of work. He gave up just three hits and two walks, while striking out a career-high 12 batters. Will Kincanon then followed with 1.2 scoreless innings for Winston-Salem.
The Wood Ducks continue their homestand tomorrow night when they welcome the Potomac Nationals in for a four game series. The Woodies will send lefty Jake Latz (1-1, 3.93) to the hill to face off with P-Nats righty Malvin Pena (2-2, 7.80) at 7 p.m. It's Dogs and Dogs night at Grainger Stadium, featuring $1 hot dogs and $1 entry for all dogs into the ballpark. The broadcast will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
