MYRTLE BEACH, SC - A marathon on getaway day relied on one of the unlikeliest performances for the Wood Ducks (14-16, 38-61) in a 3-2 victory over the Pelicans (12-17, 55-44) on Sunday night.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - A marathon on getaway day relied on one of the unlikeliest performances for the Wood Ducks (14-16, 38-61) in a 3-2 victory over the Pelicans (12-17, 55-44) on Sunday night.

Preston Scott's home run to win the game in the 13th was not that performance - it was Chuck Moorman pitching two scoreless innings in extras to claim the win on the mound and Scott Williams locked down the save.
As a whole, the pitching staff struck out 15 batters and held the Pelicans scoreless for 12 of 13 innings - including the final 11. Jeffrey Springs started and claimed nine strikeouts over his five innings of work. It marked his ninth start with at least seven strikeouts and he moved into second in the league in strikeouts with 110.
Down East opened the scoring in the second inning thanks to a Luis La O single to plate Scott. The lead would not last after the Pelicans played two with two outs in the bottom of the inning.
A response would wait until the seventh inning - thanks to a solo home run from Ti'Quan Forbes to tie the game at two. It was his first home run with the Wood Ducks and his ninth of the 2017 season.
The bullpen unit (excluding Moorman) worked six innings of one-hit, six-strikeout work. Tyler Ferguson and Adam Choplick secured things after Springs exited and watched as Moorman escaped jams with great defense behind him.
La O made a leaping catch with two outs to save the game in the 11th. Then later in the 12th, a double play was turned by Arturo Lara and La O when the baserunner on second was doubled off on a liner.
The Woodies return home on Monday to open a seven-game homestand starting with three games against the Potomac Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. for Military Monday at Grainger Stadium.
