Jose Corniell on the bump tonight for the Wood Ducks, as the Mudcats threatened in the first with a runner on second and a single up the middle by Eduardo Garcia sends the ball out to center fielder, Daniel Mateo, who threw a pretty one hopper to nail Hedbert Perez at the plate. The Woodies quack back, stealing four bases in the first. Osuna led off with a single and came around to score on a Maximo Acosta RBI single. The Woodies leave the bases loaded to end the inning, up 1-0.

To start the second off, the Mudcats leadoff with two singles, as the Woodies turn a double play and get a ground ball to end the inning, keeping the Mudcats off the board. Alejandro Osuna gets aboard for the second time tonight with a walk, advancing to second on a balk. Jose Rodriguez drives Osuna in with another RBI single making it 2-0, Woodies up.

Both teams go quiet through the middle innings as the Mudcats go three up three down at the plate in the third and fourth with one player reaching first in the fifth and sixth innings. The Woodies get a runner to third in the third and fourth inning, but fail to bring them in and are retired three up three down in the fifth and sixth innings.

Robby Ahlstrom was brought in to replace Corniell in the sixth for the Woodies, ending Corniell’s night with 5.0 innings pitched, four strikeouts, and no runs allowed. Ahlstrom strikes out the side in the seventh, adding up to five K’s on the night, as the Mudcats leave two runners aboard.

Ryne Moore, the starter for the Mudcats, ends his night with 6.0 innings, nine strikeouts, and two earned runs, as Pablo Garabitos replaced him. Osuna tried to get something going for the Woodies offense, getting on base with another single, making it on base for the third time tonight, but was left on second. In the top of the eighth, Maximo Acosta turned a 6-3 double play for the first two outs, Eduardo Garcia then knocked a triple for his second hit of the night. Michael Brewer is called from the bullpen, replacing Ahlstrom, who threw 2.2 innings with five strikeouts, getting a groundout to second to end the inning.

Junior Montero comes in to pitch for the Mudcats after Garabitos throws 1.0 with one hit and two K’s. The Woodies get one runner on second versus Montero but Montero shuts the Woodies down with a strikeout to end the inning. Michael Brewer returns for the ninth, retiring the first three batters he faces, to end the night with a save, and a 2-0 Woodies win, picked up by Corniell for his first of the young season.

The Wood Ducks (8-9) and Carolina Mudcats (8-9) continue their series tomorrow, Friday, April 29th, tied 1-1, with the first pitch of the doubleheader set at 5:00 p.m. in Kinston, NC at Grainger Stadium.
