Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the South Bend Cubs (affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) in the first game of a fourgame series. Tonight marks the first meeting of the season between the two clubs.
Opponent: South Bend has bounced back well after beginning the season with three straight shutout losses to West Michigan when the Cubs did not score over the first 32 innings of the campaign. Since those losses, they are 7-3 and have averaged 5.2 runs per game. Their top hitter has been switchhitting second baseman Yeiler Peguero, who is fourth in the league in batting average at .375. South Bend has committed the most errors in the league and ranks last in the league in team fielding percentage, but they have allowed the second fewest runs in the league.
Last Game: Wednesday: Dayton 4, Lansing 3 (11 innings). The Dragons prevailed in the rubber match of the set, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning on an RBI single by Hector Vargas with the bases loaded and no outs. The game was hard-fought for the entire night, featuring brief one-run leads for each team followed by immediate comebacks by the opponent. Neither team started an offensive inning with a lead during the game. The Dragons finished with 12 hits, including two hits each for John Sansone, James Vasquez, and Brantley Bell.
- Taylor Trammell has hit safely in nine straight games, batting .263 during the streak. This is the longest currently-active hitting streak in the Midwest League. Trammell was a supplemental first round draft pick by the Reds in 2016 out of Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia. He was a football star in high school, rushing for more than 2,400 yards and 36 TDs as a senior. Trammell was rated as the "Fastest Baserunner" and "Best Athlete" in the Reds organization by Baseball America.
- Last Friday night, Ryan Olson fired the first nine-inning complete game in the month of April in Dragons history. Olson also tossed only the second nine-inning shutout for a Dragons pitcher in the last nine seasons (Wendolyn Bautista had one in 2016, the first since Enerio Del Rosario did it in 2008). Olson over his two starts in 2017: 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 16 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 12 SO. He has not allowed a runner to reach third base and only two have reached second base. Both starts have come on the road. Olson has the highest total of innings among all pitchers who have not been scored upon this season in all of Minor League Baseball with 16.
- The Dragons have won nine of their last 11 games. They have also won four straight series (2-0 at LC; 3-0 vs. WM; 2-1 at GL, 2-1 vs. LAN).
- The Dragons have held at least a share of first place for the last eight days. They currently lead the East Division by one and one-half games.
