TinCaps Top Dragons 9-4 on Wednesday Afternoon

Fort Wayne, Ind.-Midwest League batting leader Jake Bauers collected three hits and raised his average to .379 as the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 9-4 on Wednesday afternoon. The TinCaps have won the first two games of the series that will conclude on Thursday night.

The Dragons led 4-2 in the fourth inning, collecting eight hits over the first four frames as they built the lead. But Fort Wayne scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game and then took the lead with three runs in the fifth at 7-4. Fort Wayne's Adolfo Reina belted a two-run home run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

The Dragons took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, collecting three extra base hits in the inning as they got doubles from Daniel Pigott and Gabriel Rosa sandwiched around a triple by Jon Matthews. After Fort Wayne tied the game in the third, the Dragons jumped back ahead with a two-run fourth, keyed by a run-scoring single by Avain Rachal and a Fort Wayne error. But after Fort Wayne took the lead in the fifth, the Dragons were held to just one hit and no runs over the final four innings.

Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (4-7) suffered the loss, going four-plus innings and allowing nine hits and seven runs (six earned) with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Dragons finished the game with 10 hits. Matthews led the attack with two hits including his triple, a run scored, and an RBI. Rosa had two hits including a double. Ronald Bueno and Tanner Rahier also had two hits. It was Rahier's fifth two-hit game in the six games played in the second half.

The Dragons (1-5) close out the series and the road trip on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. against the TinCaps (4-2). Jackson Stephens (0-0, 6.75) will make his second start for the Dragons. Fort Wayne will counter with Ronald Herrera (5-4, 3.47). The next home game is Friday, June 27 vs. the Lake County Captains at Fifth Third Field.

Notes: The TinCaps have scored 19 runs on 32 hits over the first two games of the series after Dayton pitchers had held the opposition to five runs or less in 17 consecutive games.
