Hours after losing a heartbreaker in North Little Rock, the Tulsa Drillers faced the Arkansas Travelers in the second game of the series. Down 3-0 going into the seventh, the Arkansas bats came alive once again in the late innings and scored six unanswered runs to take the 6-3 win.
Drillers starting pitcher Caleb Ferguson was once again excellent in this one. The lefty allowed a man to reach second base in each of the second and third innings, but that was the most trouble he was in all day. This was the second consecutive start in which Ferguson has gone five strong and did not allow a run.
On the other side of the ball, Arkansas starter Anthony Misiewicz was also very good in his five innings of work. He did not allow a Driller to get past first base until the top of the fifth inning when Jacob Scavuzzo led off the inning with his third homer of the season. Misiewicz would go on to finish the inning, ending his day with seven strikeouts.
Tulsa added to its 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh when Kyle Garlick led the inning off with a double, followed by Scavuzzo getting hit by a pitch. Hitless in his last five games, Peter O'Brien stepped in a lined a clutch double to the left-center gap, plating a pair of runs.
Ariel Hernández replaced Ferguson in the sixth and sat down all three men that he faced. But the Travs came roaring back in the bottom of the seventh. After a leadoff double, Arkansas strung together four more singles to even things up at 3-3.
The dagger came in the bottom of the eighth when Josh Sborz walked the first two Travs he faced, and then gave up a home run to Joseph Odom that put Arkansas up by three.
Connor Joe led the top of the ninth off with a single, but the rally would stop there. The 6-3 defeat was sealed after the next three Drillers struck out to end the game.
WHAT YOU MISSED
Scavuzzo has launched a home run in three out of the last four games that he has played in. The outfielder was also responsible for two of the Drillers runs and has increased his average to .325.
The defeat marks the second time this season in which the Drillers have lost consecutive games this season, with the other being on the road at Midland on April 9-10.
After hitting his third double of the year, Garlick has hit safely in 11 of the 15 games that he has started in this season.
