Chester, Betts Selected to SAL All-Star Game

Chester named starting DH for Southern Division
June 4, 2013

When the 54th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game is played on Tuesday, June 18th at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey, the Greenville Drive will be represented by two players on the Southern Division team, including one starter at his position.

David Chester gets the nod as the starting designated hitter, while Mookie Betts has been selected as a utility infielder. This is the first all-star selection for both Chester and Betts during their respective professional careers.

"Both of these players have done a great job during the first half of the regular season and are well-deserving of their spots on the South Atlantic League All-Star Team," noted Drive manager Carlos Febles. "It is always nice to be recognized for your play on the field and I'm sure that David and Mookie are excited about being selected. These guys are prime examples of the kind of players that the Red Sox hope to develop in their minor league system, and we couldn't be prouder."

A native of Collinsville, Oklahoma, Chester has provided some significant power in the middle of the Drive lineup in 2013 while splitting time between first base and designated hitter. He leads Greenville and ranks among the league leaders in homers (9, T-5th) and RBIs (42, T-4th).

Chester also ranks among the team leaders in hits (50, 1st), runs (22, T-3rd) doubles (12, T-3rd), total bases (89, T-1st), walks (21, 2nd), and slugging percentage (.464, 2nd).

The 20-year old Betts is Greenville's other selection to the all-star game. He has started 48 of the Drive's 55 games this season, all at second base.

Betts put together a remarkable month of May. He ranked among the league leaders for May in average (.356, 3rd), runs (23, T-5th), hits (36, T-2nd), extra-base hits (19, 1st), total bases (67, 1st), doubles (13, 1st), homers (6, T-5th), walks (21, T-1st), on-base percentage (.472, 2nd), slugging percentage (.663, 1st) and OPS (2nd, 1.135). He also put together a 19 game hitting streak from May 5-25, the league's longest hitting streak of the season.

Betts leads the team and is second in the league with 41 walks, and he also ranks among the team leaders in hits (49, T-2nd), runs (38, 1st), doubles (14, 2nd), homers (8, 2nd), stolen bases (11, 1st), on-base percentage (.417, 1st) and slugging percentage (.509, 1st).

"The Red Sox are among the best in the game at scouting, drafting, and developing Major League talent," noted Drive Co-Owner/President, Craig Brown. "They understand the importance of the amateur draft and international scouting. Having two players selected to this year's South Atlantic League All-Star Game further demonstrates the overall quality of the Boston Red Sox minor league system as they continually build for the future."

The Drive are currently in the midst of a three-game road trip, and return home to Fluor Field on Friday, June 7th for a six-game homestand, beginning with a three-game series against the Hickory Crawdads.
