Hickory, NC - A pitcher's duel broke out in Tuesday's series finale between the Hickory Crawdads and the Greenville Drive, and it was the Crawdads who came away with a 3-1 win to claim a victory of the four-game series.
In a spot start for the Crawdads (17-15, 44-58), left-hander Christian Torres (2-2) held the Drive (15-16, 56-44) to just one hit over five scoreless innings while striking out three to earn the victory.
Despite taking the loss, Bryan Mata (3-3) continued his outstanding work, as he allowed just one earned run in five innings with six strikeouts, which matched his season high.
A pair of Drive errors in the bottom of the first, including a misplay of Andretty Cordero's single in the outfield, allowed Hickory to take a 1-0 lead.
The Crawdads scored two more runs in the middle innings to extend the lead thanks to an RBI single by Cordero in the fifth and a solo homer by Charles Leblanc in the sixth.
Bobby Dalbec collected two of the Drive's four hits in the contest, and he also scored the lone run when he came in on a groundout by Mitchell Gunsolus in the seventh.
After an off day, the Drive will welcome the Charleston RiverDogs, a New York Yankees affiliate, to Greenville as part of the Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx. Thursday's first pitch at Fluor Field is at 7:05 PM. Left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez (3-1, 3.30) takes the mound in the opener for the Drive, and the RiverDogs will start right-hander Freicer Perez (6-3, 2.87).
