Greenville, SC - On Friday, April 14th, the Drive and an outstanding team of Upstate Diversity and Inclusion Champions will be welcoming fans of all ages to the HBCU Classic at Fluor Field, presented by Michelin, North America. This marks the 6th annual celebration of HBCUs and the historic legacy of Jackie Robinson, and the 2017 edition will feature the popular SC Marching 101, Benedict College Marching Band, post-game fireworks, and much more entertainment for fans of all ages.
"The HBCU Classic allows us to share with the next generation the importance of diversity and inclusion among all walks of life, and we are thrilled to team up with the Drive for this special night," said Leesa Owens, Michelin's Director of Community Relations.
The on-field action showcases a doubleheader with the Benedict College Tigers and the Paine College Lions at 3:30 PM, with the Claflin University Panthers meeting the Clark Atlanta University Panthers scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM. The best seats in the ballpark are only $8, and to ensure that every student can be part of this memorable and uplifting experience, all students K-12 will be admitted free.
The SC Marching 101, one of the nation's most storied marching bands, as well as the Benedict College Marching Band, will be performing in between games no earlier than 6:30 PM, allowing fans a unique "pregame show" prior to the evening's second game. Representatives from all four institutions will be on hand to participate in pre-game ceremonies, and the Drive and Red Sox have a Jackie Robinson tribute planned during the second game that will honor the man who broke the color barrier in baseball.
"An important pillar of the Drive's community engagement platform is diversity and inclusion, and the HBCU Classic presented by Michelin is a highlight of that," said Drive Owner and Team President Craig Brown. "It is exciting to recognize the positive impact these HBCU schools are having on the lives of so many, and we are thrilled to honor Jackie Robinson's immeasurable impact on baseball. We couldn't be happier to welcome these programs and festivities back to Fluor Field as we celebrate their value and importance in our community."
Representatives from all four institutions plus Diversity and Inclusion champions from across the Community will be on hand to participate in the pre-game ceremonies, and all will enjoy a special Jackie Robinson tribute by the Boston Red Sox honoring the man who broke the color barrier in baseball. Following the games a spectacular fireworks show will conclude the day's festivities.
