Former Greenville Drive manager Gabe Kapler has been selected by the Philadelphia Phillies as their new manager for the 2018 season.
Kapler skippered the Drive in their second season in 2007, and the team won 58 games. While managing in Greenville, Kapler helped oversee the development of eight future major leaguers, most notably Josh Reddick, Daniel Bard and Felix Doubront.
The 42 year-old has spent the past three years with the Los Angeles Dodgers as their Director of Player Development. He was a finalist for the Dodgers managerial position prior to the 2016 season.
Kapler played parts of 12 seasons in the major leagues with the Red Sox, Rangers, Rays, Rockies, Tigers and Brewers, posting a career .268 average with 82 homers. Four of those seasons (2003-06) were spent with the Red Sox, and he was a member of Boston's 2004 postseason roster when they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series.
