Greenville, SC - Greenville Drive pitcher Jay Groome has been selected as the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 31st-August 6th, the league announced on Monday.
The left-hander only made one start during the week, but he made it count, as he set career highs with eight strikeouts over six innings pitched in a victory over the Asheville Tourists on Wednesday, August 2nd. He allowed just one hit and one walk.
Groome is the second Drive player to receive weekly honors from the South Atlantic League in 2017, as Tucker Tubbs was named the league's Player of the Week for June 26th-July 2nd. He also becomes the first Drive pitcher to receive South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week since Logan Boyd, who earned the honor the week of July 18th-24th of last season.
The 12th overall selection in the 2016 Draft by the Red Sox out of Barnegat High School in New Jersey, Groome enters Monday's action with a 2-4 record and a 7.90 ERA in just seven starts. After missing nearly three months of the season with an injury, he has struck out six or more hitters in four of his last six appearances.
The Drive begin a three-game road series in Kannapolis tonight before returning to Fluor Field on Thursday night to play the Rome Braves. For more information, visit greenvilledrive.com.
