Asheville, NC - After a year of evenly matched contests between the Greenville Drive and Asheville Tourists in 2016, their first contest of 2017 was no different, as it required extra innings. The Tourists were able to come away with a 3-1 victory when Jacob Bosiokovic smacked a two-run walkoff homer in the 10th inning.
The final frame lasted all of two batters, as the Tourists (5-3) received a leadoff double in the 10th from Taylor Snyder before Bosiokovic's opposite field homer to right-center off Matthew Gorst (0-1) ended the game.
The loss spoiled a terrific effort from Drive (5-3) starter Mike Shawaryn, who held the Tourists to just one hit over five scoreless innings while punching out eight hitters against one walk.
Asheville's Antonio Santos matched Shawaryn pitch for pitch over the first four innings before the Drive struck for a run in the fifth. Roldani Baldwin began the inning with a double to left field, and he came home when Lorenzo Cedrola added a double of his own with two outs to make the score 1-0.
The Tourists tied the game up in the seventh as Vince Fernandez singled to lead off and later came home on an infield single by Snyder.
Tyler Hill notched two hits for Greenville in the game, while Jordan Weems held Asheville to just one run over three innings of relief. Snyder was the lone Asheville hitter to collect two hits.
The series continues on Friday night in Asheville with a 7:05 first pitch. Left-hander Logan Boyd (0-0, 9.00) takes the ball for the Drive, and he'll face off against Tourists right-hander Riley Pint (0-0, 0.00).
