Yankees Take 13-Inning Marathon, up 1-0 in Division Series
DUNEDIN, FL - It took 13 innings, but a double by SS Gleyber Torres and a LF D.J. Davis error on the play brought home just the third run of the game in a 2-1 victory for the Tampa Yankees (1-0) over the Dunedin Blue Jays (1-0). The Yankees are up 1-0 in the best two of three series.
Each run to provide the 1-1 score was plated in the third inning. In the top half, 2B Jorge Mateo reached on a fielder's choice to bring home RF Devyn Bolasky. In the bottom of the third, CF Anthony Alford smashed a single up the middle with the infield in to tie the game, scoring D.J. Davis.
The 1-1 score would home for ten innings until the 13th. The innings in between did not go without their share of drama. RHP Yefrey Ramirez and RHP Luis Santos dueled to the eighth. Ramirez allowed five hits over his seven innings, fanning three. Santos, meanwhile, struck out a career high ten batter and tied a career high with eight innings, allowing four hits.
In the seventh against Ramirez, 1B Ryan McBroom led off with a walk but was caught stealing with no one out. On the next pitch, DH Max Pentecost tripled to left center.
Dunedin had their chance in the 11th and 12th innings as well. After RHP Jordan Foley retired all nine batters he faced in innings eight through ten, a pair of leadoff walks started the rally for the Jays.
In the 11th, D.J. Davis found himself on second with one out, but Alford and 2B John La Prise each struck out at the hands of RHP Eduardo Rivera. In the 12th against RHP Sean Carly (W, 1-0), RF Jonathan Davis walked and stole second with no one out. With McBroom at the plate, Davis was caught stealing third.
RHP Chris Rowley (L, 0-1) worked through trouble in his first two frames, and allowed a one-out single to 3B Thairo Estrada. The next batter, Torres, doubled to the corner in left. D.J. Davis had it cut off, but misplayed the ball, allowing Estrada to score the go-ahead run. RHP Dillon McNamara (S, 1) shut the Jays down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
RHP Jon Harris deals for Dunedin with the Jays needing a win to keep their season alive at 6:30 PM on Wednesday. LHP Josh Rogers goes for Tampa.
