The Dunedin Blue Jays opened a three-game series against the South Division leading Charlotte Stone Crabs with an emphatic 9-0 win on Friday night at Dunedin Stadium. LHP Zach Logue allowed just one hit over 6.0 shutout innings while striking out 8 for the Blue Jays, turning in the seventh consecutive quality start and fourth straight scoreless outing by a Dunedin starting pitcher.
Logue was on his A-game from the start, striking out two batters in the first inning and two more in the second. After a one-out single by Kevin Padlo in the second, he retired 14 of his final 15 batters faced, allowing just one additional runner to reach base on a fifth inning walk.
The Dunedin offense provided him with run support in the fourth inning. With two outs, C Riley Adams drew a walk. DH Alberto Mineo followed with a double, his second of the game, to score Adams and put the Blue Jays up 1-0. LF Ivan Castillo followed with an RBI triple, increasing Dunedin's lead to 2-0 and his league-leading batting average to .306.
The Blue Jays added another run in the fifth when 2B Logan Warmoth dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to score RF Rodrigo Orozco from third after Orozco singled and advanced on a wild pitch and an error.
The Dunedin offense wasn't done, batting around and breaking the game open in the sixth inning with four more runs. Adams opened the frame with a double. After Mineo moved him over with a ground out to the right side, the Stone Crabs intentionally walked Castillo to put runners on the corners. 3B Nash Knight dropped a single infront of the centerfielder to bring home Adams and make it 4-0.
Charlotte elected to turn the game over to the bullpen with two runners on, but the relief core had no better luck. 1B David Jacob reached on an error by the second baseman, bringing home Castillo with another run. Orozco then worked a walk to load the bases. CF Joshua Palacios was hit by a pitch, forcing home a run, and Warmoth followed with an RBI single to make it 7-0 in Dunedin's favor.
After six stellar innings, Logue handed the ball over to Florida State League All-Star LHP Angel Perdomo out of the pen. Perdomo tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth, striking out a pair and allowing one hit.
Mineo was back at it in the seventh, knocking his third hit of the game to lead off the inning. Castillo and Jacob each drew walks to load the bases with one out. Palacios singled to center to score Mineo, and with the bases still loaded, Warmoth worked a walk to force home Dunedin's ninth run of the game.
RHP Jackson McClelland followed Perdomo on the mound with a scoreless ninth inning to finish off the 9-0 win. Logue earned his 10th win of the season for his one-hit effort and improved to 7-2 in a Dunedin uniform while lowering his Advanced A ERA to 2.67. Mineo had three hits while Adams had two, and Warmoth drove in three runs.
The win improves Dunedin's second half record to 27-14, the best overall in the Florida State League. At time of publication, they sit 2.5 games above Clearwater in first place. Overall, Dunedin's full-season record moves to 58-51, tied for the most wins in the FSL. The Blue Jays and Stone Crabs will continue their three-game set at Dunedin Stadium tomorrow evening at 6:30 PM during the Blue Jays' annual Ladies Night celebration.
