Game 1:
Coming into the series Dunedin had previously swept the Hammerheads at Jupiter in late April, so Jupiter was looking to get back at the Blue Jays. However, in game one Dunedin jumped on board in the 3rd inning with a Cal Stevenson double to the warning track in right-center field. It didn't take long for the Hammerheads to strike back, as an Isael Soto walk was followed by a Connor Grant double to tie the game.
The starting pitchers finished all square in terms of runs allowed with one a piece as Joey Murray struck out five in 4.1 IP. He was able to lower his season ERA to 0.96 for the year in his second start as a Blue Jay. Trevor Rogers was equally as spectacular for Jupiter fanning nine batters in 5.2 innings of work. The turn to the bullpen in the 4th inning saw Matt Shannon get out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game even at 1-1. Unfortunately, the next trip out to the mound was not as successful, as Shannon gave up four runs on four hits to break the game open to 5-1 with just one inning to play in the shortened doubleheader game. Dunedin was unable to make noise, and the team fell for the first time to Jupiter on the season.
Game 2:
A thirty minute break in between games was unable to cool off the Jupiter bats as they jumped to an early 1-0 lead off the bat of Víctor Víctor Mesa to score Jose Devers. Turner Larkins worked out of the inning to keep the Hammerheads at one run, even with an error and two hits in the frame. Jupiter came back to hit in the 3rd inning to extend their lead even further. They plated two runs as Lazaro Alonso knocked a double right down the left field line to take the game to 3-1.
A Cullen Large triple in the bottom of the 4th was the start to the inning the Blue Jays needed to mount a comeback. Ryan Noda hit a sacrifice fly to right field to get the Blue Jays on the board, but it was the only run of the inning. The opportunities began to dwindle for Dunedin as they came closer to the 7th inning. Another Lazaro Alonso single to score a run seemed like it may have put the game out of reach. Dunedin came up in the bottom of the 7th inning with one more chance to climb back into the game. Kacy Clemens got the first hit off the inning with a scorching double down the right field line. Norberto Obeso trimmed the lead to 3-2 with a single through the infield. A walk to Kevin Vicuña and a hit by pitch to Samad Taylor saw the bases get loaded for the top of the Blue Jays lineup. Cal Stevenson and Chavez Young took two straight free passes to tie the game a 4-4 and send us to extra innings.
In the first extra inning, the Blue Jays got the bases loaded with one out and couldn't push a run across. Samad Taylor almost won the game with a deep fly ball to center field that was just shy of a home run and tracked down by Victor Victor Mesa. Dunedin found themselves in a similar situation with the bases loaded and just one out in the bottom of the 9th inning. Ryan Noda stepped in the box after grounding out with a chance to win the game in the 7th inning. He took a pitch up in the zone to the opposite field for the first walk-off home run of the year for the Blue Jays, and the second grand slam of the year. The celebration was on at Jack Russell as he was met with a Gatorade shower at home plate from his teammates.
The series will conclude tomorrow with a 1 pm start time at Jack Russell Stadium. The Blue Jays look to keep the momentum going off of an incredible finish in extras.
