Norfolk, VA -- Down to the game's final strike, Christian Arroyo doubled home the tying and go-ahead runs in the ninth inning to vault the Durham Bulls past the Norfolk Tides 5-4 at Harbor Park on Wednesday night.
Trailing 4-3, Jake Cronenworth singled with one out in the ninth against Luis Gonzalez (L, 0-2) to start the rally. Nate Lowe walked before Jake Smolinski popped out. But Arroyo rescued the Bulls (4-8), knifing a double inside the right field line to score Cronenworth and Lowe to give Durham its first lead of the game.
Former Tides closer Oliver Drake (S, 1), who earned nine of his 33 career Tides saves against the Bulls, saved his first game for the Bulls, closing out an uneventful ninth inning with three strikeouts.
Mike Franco (W, 2-0), like Drake, pitching for the second straight game, earned the win with two perfect innings.
The Tides took a 2-0 lead in the second against spot starter Luis Santos, but Durham tied the game in the fourth on a two-run double with two outs by Mike Brosseau.
Immediately, the Tides regained the lead in the fourth by scoring a run against Austin Pruitt on a single by Anderson Feliz.
The Bulls tied the game again 3-3 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Smolinski, scoring Andrew Velazquez.
But the Tides once again pushed ahead in the bottom of the fifth when Mason Williams walks, took third on a throwing error by second baseman Nick Solak, then scored on a sac fly by Ryan Mountcastle.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak, and moved the Bulls back into a third place tie in the South with Norfolk (5-9).
The series closes on Thursday at 12:05 PM ET with Aaron Slegers (0-0, 7.27) matching up against Norfolk's Keegan Akin (0-0, 3.00).
