Toledo, OH -- In a game shortened to 6 1/2 innings by snow, the Durham Bulls fell to the Toledo MudHens 3-1 on Monday night at Fifth Third Field.
The game started in 36 degree conditions, then weaved through off-and-on flurries for the next two hours, and as the last of the seventh inning was about to began, the umpires called the Bulls (4-6) off the field. After a 16-minute delay, the game was called due to snow resulting from the diffiulty for the players and umpires to see the baseball against the dark skies.
Toledo (7-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first against Anthony Banda (L, 2-1). Banda grinded through a 32-pitch opening inning, permitting two walks and issuing three walks. Banda's first two starts resulted in 16 strikeouts against no walks. Banda worked two outs into the fifth before he was relieved by Ian Gibaut.
Warwick Saupold, a native Australian, threw three scoreless innings in the cold and snow. Josh Turley (W, 1-0) earned the win allowing one run and one hit, but walked four during his outing.
Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, Durham got on the board on a single by Justin Williams that followed a pair of walks. In the seventh, the Bulls stranded Jason Coats at third when Micah Johnson and Willy Adames both fanned against Zac Reininger
The second game of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at 6:35 PM ET with Forrest Snow (0-1, 4.76) opposing Toledo's Ryan Carpenter (0-1, 5.23).
