Lawrenceville, GA --- Gwinnett scored three times in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie to defeat Durham 4-1 in the series opener at Coolray Field on Monday night.
Teenage shortstop Ozzie Albies singled with one out, advanced to third on a wild pickoff throw from Danny Farquhar (L, 1-1), then was awarded home on a balk giving Gwinnett (19-20) a 2-1 lead. The Braves added two more runs before the inning concluded, highlighted by an RBI-double from Adonis Garcia
Jaime Schultz worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing only a home run to Matt Tuiasosopo in the second inning. Schultz fanned six and overtook Indaiapolis' Tyler Glasnow for the International League lead in strikeouts with 52.
Carlos Corporan tied the game with a home run to right field in the fifth against Casey Kelly (W, 2-1).
The Bulls, who managed just five hits, misfired with a chance to take an early lead against rehabbing Shae Simmons, who was making his first appearance in a game in 21 months. Dayron Varona tripled to open the game, but was stranded.
The Bulls fell to 1-3 on their six-game road trip, and five games behind first place Charlotte.
Austin Pruitt (2-2, 2.70) starts the series' middle game Tuesday night at 7:05 PM ET against Kanekoe Texeira (1-2, 2.70).
