Matt Torra, Dane De La Rosa and Bryan Augenstein combined on a six-hit shuout as the Durham Bulls blanked the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 3-0 at Coca Cola Park.
Torra (W, 6-6), who won for the fourth time in five decisions, battled starter Matt Wright (L, 0-1) to a scoreless draw into the seventh inning. Torra retired 13 straight at one point in the game, and faced one over the minimum through six innings. Wright carried a one-hitter into the seventh in his second start since joining the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
In the seventh, Leslie Anderson singled and went to third on a hit-and-run single by Stephen Vogt. Brandon Allen hit a sacrifice fly to bring Anderson home for a 1-0 Bulls lead.
The lead remained 1-0 into the ninth inning when the Bulls capitalized on a dropped foul popfly by Tug Hulett. With one out and Allen at first with a single, Brignac sailed a popup into the nighttime sky, which Hulett had hit off the palm of his glove for an error. On the next pitch, Brignac singled to right. After a comebacker by Jesus Feliciano, Cole Figueroa guided a 2-2 pitch down the left field line for a two-run double as the Bulls (30-40) took a 3-0 lead.
Torra worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and no walks. After surrendering a double with two outs in the seventh, De La Rosa entered to retired Michael Spidale on a sliding catch in right-center.
In the eighth, De La Rosa walked the first two hitters, but Tuffy Gosewisch failed to get a bunt down and struck out. Hulett fanned and Andres Blanco flied out to right field to end the inning.
Bryan Augenstein (S, 1) struck out the first two hitters of the ninth before Jason Pridie doubled and Spidale singled. Batting as the tying run, Cody Overbeck fanned to end the game.
The Bulls can claim the outright series with a win on Sunday with Lance Pendleton (2-2, 3.62) against Tom Cochran (4-1, 3.76) at 1:35 PM ET.
