DURHAM, NC - The Charlotte Knights slugged past the Durham Bulls in a 9-6 homer fest at the DBAP on Monday night. The ball was carrying in downtown Durham, as the two teams combined to hit seven round trippers in the opening match of the two game series.
After working through the first two innings allowing just a single, Cesar Ramos (L, 4-5, 4.18) gave up three runs in the third thanks in part to a 2-run double from Jose Lopez. Ramos began the following frame with two quick outs, before he allowed a single to Josh Phegley. Drew Garcia followed with a ground ball to Cole Figueroa, which should have ended the inning, but Figueroa couldn't handle the grounder. For the second straight night, a Bulls error would prove to be costly. The following batter, Greg Golson, crushed a three run shot over the Blue Monster to double up the Knights lead.
The Bulls battled back with four runs of their own in the fourth. Henry Wrigley and Leslie Anderson kick started the offense with back-to-back home runs. The scoring didn't stop there. Stephen Vogt followed with a single to right field and was brought home thanks to a Tim Beckham blast. His 2-run shot over the right-field wall was his second in as many days and cut the Knights lead down to two.
The following inning, after a single from Rich Thompson, Figueroa blasted his second home run of the season. Figueroa's 2-run job brought Durham within a run.
Unfortunately though, Ramos could not stop the bleeding. He gave up another two runs in the sixth before he was pulled in favor of Ryan Reid. Ramos ended the night tossing 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, nine runs, six of them earned. Reid and Brandon Gomes combined to go the rest of the way, holding the Knights without a run and striking out seven in the process.
The Bulls and Knights conclude their quick two game set on Tuesday evening at 7:05pm. RHP Dylan Axelrod (7-4, 2.97) goes for the Knights against Durham's RHP Lance Pendleton (7-5, 4.76).
