Norfolk, VA --- Mikie Mahtook's infield single in the 11th scored Kevin Kiermaier with the winning run as Durham edged Norfolk 2-1 at Harbor Park on Saturday night.
Kiermaier walked to open the Durham (13-4) 11th inning, stole second with none out, then swiped third with two down ahead of Mahtook's hard grounder into the shortstop hole to bring Kiermaier home.
The Bulls moved to 7-0 away from the DBAP, and have taken three of four of the split home-and-home series.
Bulls starter Matt Andriese was locked up in a duel with former ECU Pirates righty Matt Wright for the first seven innings. Andriese allowed a single on his first pitch of the night, but then held the Tides (4-12) hitless until a seventh inning single. Wright one-hit the Bulls through five before Cole Figueroa homered with two outs in the sixth for a 1-0 Bulls lead.
Norfolk tied the game in the seventh, stringing three consecutive hits against Andriese to start the inning. However, Andriese fanned the next hitter, then allowed just a fielder's choice grounder by Alexi Casilla before exiting the inning tied 1-1.
The Tides had a great chance in the eighth against Juan Carlos Oviedo before the former Florida Marlins closer escaped. A bunt single, walk and error loaded the bases with one out. Oviedo showcased a great set of changeups to fan Johnny Monell and Chris Marrero to keep the game tied 1-1.
Andriese worked seven innings, permitting four hits and fanning seven. Steve Geltz (W, 2-0) notched the win with two hitless innings and four strikeouts. Kirby Yates (S, 6) earned his league-leading sixth save with a perfect 11th inning.
The four Bulls pitchers combined to strikeout 16 Tides batters.
The Bulls maintained a three game lead in the South over Gwinnett, which beat Charlotte on Saturday.
The series continues on Sunday at 1:05 PM ET with Enny Romero starting against Kevin Gausman.
