Norfolk Hands Bulls First Road Loss, 6-3

Figueroa, Sands HR In Gusty Easter Defeat
April 20, 2014

Norfolk, VA --- David Adams' two-run homer in the sixth lifted the Norfolk Tides to a 6-3 victory over the Durham Bulls on Easter Sunday at Harbor Park.

Adams second home run of the season partnered with a 25mph wind out to right field, and capped a difficult inning for Enny Romero (L, 2-2). With the game tied 1-1, Romero allowed a two-out single to Caleb Joseph to score Jemile Weeks. After another single, then a passed ball to bring in a second run, Adams lifted a flyball that on a windless day would have been caught, but Sunday was no ordinary day. When the wind was done with it, Adams circled the bases with a 5-1 lead.

The Bulls (13-5) brought the tying run to the plate twice in the ninth inning, but Preston Guilmet (S, 2) induced Ray Olmedo to hit into a 3-6-3 double play to end the game.

Romero was matched by Kevin Gausman, whose fastball ranged between 94-97mph and shut down the Bulls on four hits over five innings.

Norfolk took a 1-0 lead in the third against Romero before Jerry Sands connected for the tying homer in the sixth against reliever Chris Jones (W, 1-2).

Trailing 6-1 in the eighth, Cole Figueroa hopped on the back of the winds and homered to right field, his second in two games.

Romero allowed five earned runs over 5 2/3 innings, striking out five.

The loss was Durham's first on the road this season after winning their opening seven games, and shrunk the Bulls' lead in the South to two games over Gwinnett, which beat Charlotte on Sunday.

The six-game set with Norfolk ends on Monday at 12:05 PM ET with Mike Montgomery (2-0, 4.38) starting against Eddie Gamboa (0-1, 4.00).
