Hoes Single In 12th Drops Bulls, 1-0

Durham Drops Third Straight In Norfolk
July 3, 2016

Norfolk, VA --- Michael Almanzar jarred the ball loose at home plate to score the game's only run on a single from LJ Hoes as Norfolk edged Durham 1-0 at Harbor Park on Saturday night.

Almanzar doubled off of the glove of Richie Shaffer with two outs in the 12th before Hoes looped a single into right. Dayron Varona's throw skipped into catcher Luke Maile's mitt, who then turned to his left to apply the tag, but Almanzar's shoulder dislodged the ball and scored the game's only run.

Parker Markel (L, 2-2), who was the sixth Durham pitcher of the game, took the loss. Markel threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits.

Eddie Gamboa worked 4 1/3 innings in a spot start, followed by Mark Sappington, Dylan Floro, Neil Wagner and Tyler Sturdevant, who combined to 4 2/3 scoreless frames.

The Bulls (36-48) had only four hits and did not have a baserunner reach second base all game.

Mike Wright worked 6 2/3 innings for the Tides, and lowered his career ERA against the Bulls to 0.52. Wright has given up just three runs over 51 2/3 innings over seven starts against Durham.

The Bulls, dropped to three behind first place Charlotte, wrap up their series and road trip Sunday at 6:05 PM ET with Austin Pruitt (6-5, 3.13).
