Shaffer's Double Carries Durham Past Norfolk, 4-2

Marinez Notches 2nd Win; Bulls Improve To 5-3 On Road Trip
April 21, 2016

Norfolk, VA --- Richie Shaffer laced a two-run double in the 10th inning to crack a 2-2 tie, lifting the Durham Bulls to a 4-2 win over the Norfolk Tides on Thursday night.

Shaffer connected against Pedro Beato (L, 0-1) just after third baseman Michael Almanzar threw away a ground ball at first base to give Durham (9-6) life in the 10th.

Jhan Marinez (W, 2-1) pitched the final two innings to earn his second win of the season.

Durham took an initial 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jaff Decker's double play brought Patrick Leonard home from third.

The Tides (4-10) evened the game on a Garabez Rosa homer in the third against starter Adam Wilk. The Tides went ahead in the fifth on a single from Ozzie Martinez.

However the Bulls rallied in the seventh to tie the game 2-2. Kyle Roller began the inning with a wind-blown single, with Dayron Varona singling sharply to center. After a strikeout, Terry Doyle walked Patrick Leonard to fill the bases. After a pitching change, Carlos Corporan singled to left to score Roller for the tie. But consecutive strikeouts would end the frame tied.

In the 10th, Daniel Robertson singled with one out, then advanced to third when Taylor Motter's grounder to third was thrown wildly by Michael Almanzar past first base. Shaffer then drilled a two-ru double into the left field corner to give the Bulls a 4-2 lead.

Wilk received a no-decision, working five innings, permitting five hits and two runs.

The Bulls play the middle game of their series with the Tides Friday night at 7:05 PM ET. Blake Snell (1-1, 2.51) is slated to oppose Ariel Miranda (0-1, 4.22) at Harbor Park.
