Snell, Shaffer Lead Bulls Over Knights On Opening Day

Snell strikes out five, Shaffer drives in three in 7-3 Opening Day win

DURHAM, NC - Blake Snell struck out five players in five innings, and the Durham Bulls used a five-run second to take a 7-3 Opening Day win over the Charlotte Knights in front of 7,710 fans on Thursday at the DBAP.

Richie Shaffer paced the Bulls (1-0) at the plate, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Patrick Leonard was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, and Jaff Decker was 3 for 5 with a double and a stolen base.

Snell (1-0) also allowed five hits, two earned runs and just one walk en route to the win. Andrew Bellatti finished off the game with a strikeout and a walk in the ninth.

Dylan Floro was solid in relief for Durham, going three innings with three hits, no walks, and one earned run. He also struck out five batters in the game.

Scott Carroll (0-1) took the loss for the Knights (0-1), going 1 1/3 innings while allowing six hits, four earned runs and two walks.

The Bulls touched up Carroll in the five-run second inning, as the first six batters reached base. Luke Maile, Leonard and Shaffer each had RBIs to aid the rally.
