The Tri-City Dust Devils (3-1) hung on to beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-3 on Sunday night at Volcanoes Stadium. The victory clinches a winning series for the Dust Devils to begin the 2017 season.
It was a tight game throughout the night, with neither team leading by more than one run. Tri-City took the lead back in the eighth inning thanks to a Kelvin Melean single that scored Luis Asuncion. It was another strong night at the plate for Asuncion, who delivered a double and scored two runs in the win. Boomer White also extended his hitting streak to four games.
Reliever Dauris Valdez picked up the win after allowing two runs in four innings of work. Salem-Keizer had the tying run at second base with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Austin Smith survived the scare to slam the door on the Volcanoes and earn the team's first save of the season.
The Dust Devils will finish the five-game road series on Monday night. First pitch for the finale is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Volcanoes Stadium. Left-hander Osvaldo Hernandez will start for the Dust Devils. The team will return to Gesa Stadium on Tuesday, June 20th for the home opener.
