Wild Pitch Leads to Walk-Off Win

September 5, 2016

The Tri-City Dust Devils (14-23, 33-42) escaped with the 6-5 win in extra innings on Saturday night over the Vancouver Canadians (13-22, 29-44). A wild pitch in the tenth inning allowed Luis Asuncion to score the game's winning run.

Defensive mistakes hurt the Dust Devils early in the game. A pair of unearned runs helped Vancouver to build a 4-1 lead after five innings. Tri-City delivered in the bottom of the sixth inning, striking for three runs to tie the game. A D.J. McKnight home run gave the Canadians back a brief lead, but the Dust Devils answered in the bottom of the seventh inning tie the game once again.

Tri-City struggled to capitalize on opportunities at the plate late in the contest. The Dust Devils had the go-ahead run on third base in the eighth inning and could not take the lead. Tri-City had the winning run on third base in the ninth inning with one out, but failed to score.

After heading to extra innings, Luis Asuncion had a leadoff single in the tenth. A Nate Easley single moved Asuncion to third base, where he was ultimately able to score the winning run on a wild pitch from Vancouver reliever Grayson Huffman.

Left-hander Elier Sanchez will start the final game of the season on Monday night. Vancouver will counter with right-hander Denis Diaz. There will be a postgame fireworks show presented by Lourdes Health. It will also be a Coca-Cola Monday where all 22 oz Coca-Cola products are $1 all night.
