Sam Levitt, the play by play broadcaster for the Amarillo Sod Poodles, the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, will appear on Chihuahuas Chatter presented by Budweiser Select on Thursday, August 27, at 4 p.m. MDT, hosted by the voice of the Chihuahuas Tim Hagerty.
Levitt has been the voice of the Sod Poodles since their inaugural 2019 season, before which he was the broadcaster for another Double-A organization, the Corpus Christi Hooks, affiliate of the Houston Astros. Prior, he held broadcasting positions at the college level, one of which included being on the Big Ten Network.
With no Minor League Baseball in 2020, Levitt is on Chihuahuas Chatter to discuss Double-A Amarillo’s magical 2019 season, which included many top Padres prospects, and more.
“It had been in so many ways such a magical season, both on the field and off the field,” said Levitt in his pre-taped interview. “With everything that had transpired for the team and for the community during this inaugural season, the way they were embraced, the way the fans fell in love with this team, beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.”
The 2019 Sod Poodles ended up winning the Texas League Championship after winning 5 eliminations games in total during the postseason to get to the moment Padres top prospect Taylor Trammell hit a grand slam to win the championship.
Levitt said at the time on the broadcast, what ended up being a memorable broadcast moment, the line “a magical moment in a magical season.”
“To me that’s what it was. It was the cherry on top and set up what would be a very tale ending to a really really special 2019 in Amarillo.”
Being a new team in 2019 meant building a new ballpark for it. Hodgetown Stadium, nestled into downtown Amarillo, Texas, is one of the newest ballparks in professional baseball.
