Bluefield, Virginia - The Elizabethton Twins scored first Sunday night and connected for two home runs in the seventh inning, but a four-run fourth inning powered the Bluefield Blue Jays to victory after three E-Twins errors.
Willie Joe Garry Jr. doubled off the top of the wall on the first pitch of the game and scored two pitches later, giving the Twins an early lead. That lead held until the fourth, when Elizabethton committed three errors and saw four unearned runs cross.
Outside of that inning, starter Ryley Widell was as good as he's been all season. The lefty pitched into the sixth inning for the first time this year, going 5.2 innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits and a walk, with seven strikeouts.
Frandy Torres took over for Widell with two outs in the sixth and gave up single runs in the seventh and eighth inning, crucial insurance runs for Bluefield.
Elizabethton added a run in the sixth when Ruben Santana was hit with the bases loaded and then two in the seventh on back-to-back home runs from Max Smith and Seth Gray, but the bats fell silent in the eighth and ninth innings, retired in order both times to allow Bluefield to even the series at 1-1.
The rubber match of the three-game series at Bowen Field will take place Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. with Tyler Benninghoff scheduled to start for the Twins.
