Back-to-back doubles in the second inning opened the scoring streak for the Ems (35-33, 14-16) as Austin Filiere led-off the inning with a blast down the line in left field. Gustavo Polanco followed that with a shot of his own, another one down the line and in the corner to score Filiere.
Stetson Woods came into the game after Volcanoes (28-40, 12-18) starter Jason Bahr (3-2, 3.77 ERA) only went two innings, but the Ems never missed a beat. In the third, after walks to Zach Davis, Rafael Narea, and a single by Jhonny Bethencourt,
Filiere and Polanco added walks of their own to drive in Davis and Narea and Woods' night was finished after pitching to five batters without recording an out, giving up four walks and allowing three runs to score, one after he left the game on a Will Remillard double play ball.
Eugene added one more in the fourth after Davis walked with two outs, stole second and third when the catcher threw the ball into left field. In the fifth, Remillard doubled with two outs to score Bethencourt before Jared Young drove him in with a sharp line drive to right that fell for a hit.
The scoring ended when Young scored from third on a wild pitch.
Javier Assad (4-6, 3.98 ERA) had the best start of his young career, giving up just one hit and two walks while striking out nine Volcanoes. Ben Hecht relieved him in the seventh and ran into some trouble in the eighth when an error caused three unearned runs to score.
Hecht could not escape the eighth and finished with 1.2 innings and two hits, three unearned runs and three walks to go along with two strikeouts.
Brian Glowicki finished out the frame and the ninth giving up just one hit and had one strikeout.
The Ems may next be in town on Tuesday, September 5 for the Game 1 of the Divisional Playoff round. Be sure to check both Facebook and emeraldsbaseball.com for all the latest updates and playoff standings.
