The SeaWolves fell behind early on Sunday afternoon in Richmond but scored 11 unanswered runs late, taking down the Flying Squirrels 14-7 at The Diamond.
Richmond jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Casey Mize. Johneshwy Fargas led off with a double and stole third. With one out, Jalen Miller reached on an infield single putting runners on the corners. Jacob Heyward was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Gio Brusa. Brusa doubled home Fargas and Miller for a 2-0 lead. Zach Houchins followed with a two-run double for a 4-0 lead. Jonah Arenado and Hamlet Marte each had RBI knocks to make it 6-0 Squirrels after one. Mize did not make it out of the first inning.
Erie began to chip away at the Richmond lead in the second. Kody Eaves and Cam Gibson each singled with one out, putting runners on the corners. Josh Lester lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Eaves, cutting the Squirrels lead to five runs.
In the top of the third, Derek Hill tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 6-2 game.
The SeaWolves cut into the lead again in the fourth. Daniel Pinero led off and extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games. He scored on a one-out Josh Lester single making it 6-3.
Richmond went back ahead by four in the fifth against Erie reliever Zac Houston. Houchins doubled with one out and scored on a two-out Arenado single for a 7-3 lead.
Erie then began the comeback in the seventh against reliever Frank Rubio. Jose Azocar singled and Pinero walked with two outs. Eaves doubled home both to make it 7-5.
The SeaWolves then took the lead in the eighth. Sergio Alcántara led off with a single and on a hit and run, Joey Morgan put a ball through the right side, putting the tying run on base. Hill doubled down the left field line, scoring Alcantara, trimming the Squirrels lead down to a run. Isaac Paredes grounded out to second, scoring Morgan, tying the game 7-7. Azcoar then gave Erie the lead with a base hit that scored Hill. Erie loaded the bases with two outs as Eaves reached on a fielder's choice and Gibson was hit by a pitch for the third time in the game. Rubio gave way to Sam Wolff with two outs to face Lester. Lester promptly cleared the bases with a double for an 11-7 Erie lead. Lester knocked in a season-high five in the game. Alcantara followed with a base hit that scored Lester for a 12-7 lead.
The 'Wolves added two more in the ninth. Hill led off with a walk and Paredes singled. Azocar send a ball down the line at third that hit off the base and went into left, plating Hill for a 13-7 lead. Paredes would later score on a Pinero groundout for a 14-7 advantage.
Drew Carlton finished off the game, retiring all six batters he faced in a non-save situation.
Houston (4-1) earned the win in relief allowing a run on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts in three strong innings in relief.
Rubio (1-2) took the loss allowing eight runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in 1.2 innings.
