An eight-run bottom of the sixth propelled Erie past the Altoona Curve Friday at UPMC Park, beating their division rival 9-3.
The SeaWolves scored first thanks to an sacrifice fly from Danny Woodrow following a Jake Rogers triple in the second on Altoona starter Cam Vieaux.
The score remained 1-0 for Erie until a gigantic bottom of the sixth. Tate Scioneaux entered the game for Altoona and immediately surrendered a walk to Chad Sedio. After Josh Lester flew out to right field, Rogers singled to push Sedio to second. Danny Woodrow trickled a ball into right field to score Sedio to make it 2-0 Erie. Sergio Alcántara worked a walk to load up the bases on Scioneaux with one gone. Jake Robson smoked a ball into right center for a bases clearing triple, giving Erie the 5-0 lead. Scioneaux was immediately yanked, but Yeudy Garcia also struggled. Will Maddox knocked in Robson on the first pitch from Garcia to elevate the SeaWolves to a 6-0 lead. After Kody Eaves walked with two outs, Chad Sedio blasted the second triple of the inning to bring in both Maddox and Eaves. Sedio sprinted home on a wild pitch, and Erie jumped out to a 9-0 lead.
Altoona fought back in the eighth inning on Adam Ravenelle. Will Craig invited a Stephen Alemais home on a sacrifice fly to give Altoona their first run, and Cole Tucker joined him after a throwing error from Alcantara. Bryan Reynolds smacked in Jason Martin to bring the score to 9-3 Erie.
The SeaWolves (32-39) snapped a three game skid with their victory over Altoona (35-31). Joe Navilohn (2-1) earned his second victory in AA after laboring a scoreless 1.2 IP with a strikeout. Matt Hall started on the mound for Erie and looked exceptional in 4.0 IP with no runs, three hits and five strikeouts. Vieaux (2-1) suffered his first loss in AA after surrendering only one run in 5.0 IP on six hits, one walk and five strikeouts. The win tonight saw the first time since June 12, 2016 where Erie hit three triples in a game.
The two Western Division foes return tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 4:35 PM at UPMC Park. Kyle Funkhouser (3-3, 3.60 ERA) searches for his fourth consecutive win as he duels with Altoona's RHP Pedro Vasquez (1-4, 5.77 ERA) in game one.
