A SeaWolves ninth inning rally fell short as they dropped the middle game of a three-game set to the Harrisburg Senators, 5-4, on Wednesday night at FNB Field.
The Senators took the lead in the second against Erie starter Beau Burrows. Taylor Gushue lead off with a double and scored on an error for a 1-0 lead.
Erie tied the game in the top of the third against Harrisburg starter Luis Reyes when Will Maddox clobbered a two-out, solo home run to right. The home run was the first of the season for Maddox.
The 'Wolves then took the lead in the fifth. Danny Woodrow led off with an infield single and stole second. Woodrow scored on a Maddox single for a 2-1 advantage.
Harrisburg quickly regained the lead in the last of the fifth. Austin Davidson and Osvaldo Abreau started the frame with back-to-back walks. Daniel Johnson tripled home both baserunners with one out for a 3-2 Senators lead. Dan Gamache singled home Johnson with two outs for a 4-2 edge.
The Senators added one in the eighth against Erie reliever Matt Hall. Hall, who retired seven of the first eight batters he faced, including striking out five, walked the bases loaded with no outs. Erie summoned Joe Navilhon who struck out Adam Walker for the first out. Davidson followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Gamache for a 5-2 lead. Navilhon would get Erie out of the inning without any further damage.
The SeaWolves rallied in the ninth against Senators reliever Ismael Guillòn. Woodrow led off with his second infield single of the day. With one out, Jacob Robson and Maddox walked to load the bases for Josh Lester. Lester singled home a pair to cut the Harrisburg lead down to a run at 5-4. The Senators then brought in Derek Self who induced a pair of fly outs from Gabriel Quintana and Dominic Ficociello to end the game. Self earned his fifth save and second against the SeaWolves.
Reyes (4-4) earned his second straight win. He allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings.
Burrows (5-3) had his four-game winning streak snapped in a losing effort. He allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Erie will look to avoid a series sweep on Thursday morning against the Senators at 10:30 a.m. at FNB Field. RHP Sandy Baez (0-2, 3.95 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Logan Darnell (2-2, 3.91 ERA).
