The Erie SeaWolves fell short once again in their third consecutive extra innings contest Wednesday 10-9 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
In a game that started an hour and eight minutes late due to a rain delay, the Cats gave SeaWolves starter Sandy Baez trouble early. Connor Panas homered into right on a two-run bomb to put New Hampshire up 2-0 in the second.
The Wolves equalized in the home half of the second on Josh DeGraaf. Josh Lester cracked his fifth home run of the season on a two-run shot to make it 2-2.
New Hampshire responded in the third inning by scoring three runs on Baez. A Harold Ramirez single invited Bo Bichette, following an RBI double from Juan Kelly. Andrew Guillotte's sac fly to center made it 5-2 Cats.
Daz Cameron's RBI single in the bottom of the third brought Erie back within two at 5-3.
Jake Rogers's two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth tied the game back up at 5-5. It was the catcher's eighth home run of the season.
Once again, New Hampshire wasted no time in responding. After Trent Szkutnik loaded the bases, Adam Ravenelle gave up a two-run double to Cats' catcher Patrick Cantwell. A.J. Simcox misplayed a grounder from Jon Berti, sending Panas home to score to make it 8-5 New Hampshire in the fifth.
Jake Robson touched the plate in the fifth after Daz Cameron grounded into a double play to bring Erie closer at 8-6.
Kody Eaves' grounder to second brought Will Maddox in to score to make it a one run ball game in the seventh.
Erie tied the game in the eighth on Zach Jackson. Simcox pushed in his lone RBI of the game on a groundout to short to even it up at 8-8.
The SeaWolves entered an extra-inning game for the third time in the series and the 15th time this season. New Hampshire got right to it in the 10th with a Panas RBI single and a Berti RBI double to elevate the Fisher Cats ahead at 10-8 on John Schreiber.
Erie made it interesting again in the bottom of the tenth inning on reliever Andrew Case. Lester belted in a run on a single, and the Wolves managed to load the bases with two outs for Will Maddox. The second baseman could not capitalize, grounding out to first to end the game.
The Fisher Cats (43-28) handed the SeaWolves (31-39) a three game sweep, all in extra inning contests. After the off-day, the SeaWolves return to UPMC Park Friday to start a four game set with the Altoona Curve. RHP Spencer Turnbull (4-5, 4.24 ERA) is scheduled to start for Erie in the series opener.
Zach Jackson (2-1) earned the win for New Hampshire while Andrew Case picked up his fifth save. John Schreiber (0-5) fell once again in extra innings after allowing two runs, one earned with three strikeouts in 1.1 IP. Sandy Baez struggled in his shortest outing of the year, only making it 2.1 while surrendering seven hits and five earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
Jake Rogers had an impressive day behind the plate, throwing out three of four base stealers in the loss.
