Erie (45-50) clinched a series win after beating the Richmond Flying Squirrels (46-48) 4-3 in the finale of the doubleheader Wednesday at The Diamond.
The SeaWolves wasted no time to score in game two of the doubleheader. Josh Lester punched a single to left on Taylor Hill to score Daz Cameron to make it 1-0 Erie.
Herlis Rodriguez ripped a double for Erie to lead off the second inning, eventually making it to third on a Josh Thole groundout. With the infield in, Cam Gibson bounced a ball to first, giving Aramis Garcia a chance to throw Rodriguez out at home, but the Erie first baseman slid through the tag. After two innings, the SeaWolves led 2-0.
Erie added two more runs in the fourth inning. With Cam Gibson at first, A.J. Simcox drove a triple to right field to bring home the third Erie run. Danny Woodrow cracked a single to invite Simcox home to score, which ended up being the final run of the day for Erie.
A.J. Ladwig started to slow down for Erie in the 6th inning. The righty walked the opening two batters and gave up a deep flyout to center from Caleb Gindl, prompting his exit from the game. Kurt Spomer struggled for Erie in the relief attempt, surrendering a two-run single from C.J. Hinojosa. Ryan Howard reached on a Will Maddox error to keep the inning going, and then Dylan Davis banged home the third run of the inning on a single. Caleb Thielbar entered the game and recorded the final two outs, but Richmond stayed close at 4-3.
John Schreiber surrendered a double to Jonah Arenado to start the bottom of the seventh. John Polonius came on to pinch-run, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jeff Arnold. With the tying run at third, Schreiber fanned Matt Lipka and Caleb Gindl to solidify his 12th save and an Erie series win.
Ladwig (1-0) earned his first Erie win in 2018 after allowing only two runs to score on one hit and three walks with five strikeouts across 5.1 IP. Hill (0-4) dropped another loss after giving up four runs on six hits and one walk.
The SeaWolves continue the road trip Thursday to start a four game set with the Bowie Baysox. RHP Alfred Gutierrez (0-1, 7.71 ERA) will face Bowie's LHP Reid Love (2-4, 5.23 ERA) at 7:05 PM.
